This guide is designed for younger kids and their parents or guardians. Activities can be altered to fit households, areas, and budgets. This guide was created as a Silver Award project in association with Girl Scouts of River Valleys.
Materials:
- Random household objects
- Flashlight (or phone)
- A dark room
- String, twine, or tape

Time: 25 minutes
Age Range: 6 – 10
This activity will have kids gather objects they can find and create something with them. Then they will use those objects to create a shape, which they will then place in front of a light to make a fun little shadow.
Find some small to medium objects like paper, sticks, coins, string, and other random objects, as well as tape.
Combine some of the things you found to make a cool shape. It could look like a human, an animal, a car, or anything else. Use the string or tape to keep it together.
Go into a dark room and take out the flashlight. Put it behind the object you made so that you can see the object’s shadow on the wall.
Make the shadow move! Play around with it. Try to make different shapes with the same object or make multiple objects. You can do this as many times as you want.
